What it is
A quick record of the room's size and the features that shape it.
Good for
Choosing a layout
Tells you which sizes and layouts to look at.
Getting ideas
Lets you check pictures against your real space.
What to weigh up
Walls aren't straight
Measure at more than one point; older walls vary.
Hidden things
Boxing, chimney breasts and sloping ceilings change what fits.
Getting it right
Floor
Length and width at the widest points, in metres.
Height
Ceiling height, and where any slope starts and ends.
Door and window
Where they are, their sizes, and which way the door opens.
Fittings now
Where the toilet, bath and basin sit. Any of them can move; new positions add work and cost.
