The basics

Stone is porous to different degrees, so it's sealed when laid and resealed from time to time. Acidic cleaners can etch it.

Choose honed or textured stone rather than polished for grip, and reseal from time to time.

Classic veining and polish. Softer, so it can mark and etch.

Warm, pitted stone, usually filled and honed.

Soft, pale and calm.

Dark, textured and naturally grippy.
