The basics

It's the most common shower in the UK. The valve can be exposed on the wall or concealed inside it, and it can be thermostatic or manual.

How to choose

Thermostatic or manual?

A thermostatic valve holds the temperature steady even when someone runs a tap elsewhere; a manual one doesn't.

Exposed or concealed?

Exposed bar valves are simpler to fit; concealed valves look cleaner but go in before tiling.

Pressure

On a low-pressure tank-fed system, a mixer may need a pump.
